About a month ago I posted on Facebook that our stove caught on fire. We had lots of guests at the house, including a 3 year old boy, Judah, who was in the kitchen with me and his mother, Marj. Marj and I were making hamburgers for the guest. I washed the pan then relit the stove to continue cooking when the stove caught on fire and exploded.
I screamed because I sure did think I was on fire, and hid behind the refrigerator. Why I didn’t run out of the kitchen…I don’t know. I guess I don’t think too well in life or death situations. Romon comes running to the kitchen in a flash, almost like he teleported there, with a few of his man friends to put out the fire. My HERO! Thankfully everyone was ok. If the house was not made of concrete, we are sure the house would have burned down. Or is it burned up?
A few days after the incident, we had Marj and Judah over again. Judah had to sit in time out in the hallway that leads to the kitchen. He looks down the hall with concern in his voice and says, “Fuego! Fuego!” Translation: “Fire! Fire!”. He was still affected by what was no longer there. I laughed and assured him there was no more fire in the kitchen. Aw, children, right?
This reminds me of how we as adults can be. We allow things that are no longer there to affect us. We allow our past to keep us bitter and depressed. It keeps us from moving forward, happily. For some, it is your excuse for not returning to church. Even worse, not returning to God. Even if we think we are over it, we proceed into future relationships or events unhealthily cautious because being burned hurts.
You see, sometimes the harm that comes our way, we bring upon ourselves. Sometimes, someone or something else is to blame. But ALWAYS, we decide to move forward. I was afraid to use the stove for weeks. I’m still sometimes very cautious about using the stove in fear of another accident. But I want to encourage you today that the “Fuego” has been put out and you can now walk into the kitchen freely and use the stove safely. It’s your choice.
